This is Awkward by Sammy Rhodes

This is Awkward is written by Sammy Rhodes, a minister. This book is 224 pages long, and well, it’s awkward. It’s a little bit religious based, actually kind of a lot. It is written by a minister after all, so I don’t know what I expected. This review is going to be a bit awkward.

Summary of This is Awkward –

Don’t waste your awkwardness.

One of the saddest realities of life is that the things we need to talk about the most, we tend to talk about the least—from bouts with depression to sexual struggles to parent-wounds that never seem to heal. Raise these issues out loud, and wait for the awkward silence. But those awkward moments are precisely where we find connection with God and one another.

In This is Awkward, Sammy Rhodes talks directly, honestly, and hilariously (because sometimes we need to laugh) about the most painfully uncomfortable subjects in our lives. In chapters like “Parents Are a Gift (You Can’t Return Them)” and “D is for Depression,” he boldly goes where most of us fear to tread, revealing that we can be liberated by the embrace of a God who knows the most shameful things about us and loves us all the same. Because nothing is too awkward for God.

My Opinion on This is Awkward –

This is a very honest book, often somewhat witty and hitting home with certain scenarios. I do understand the internet obsession to a perfect “T” and I am bipolar, so I very much so get the depression. Life’s awkward at any and all stages of it. It’s very tough. I love that he quotes some very famous funny people and then also includes some verses for us and wisdom. It’s all actually wisdom. Some of the wisest things I’ve heard, have been said by comedians. He covers his experience in his relationships and a bunch of other random life experiences, I must say, the whole book to me, just made me like “um… okay… then.” It probably would help, if I knew how this guy wrote in the first place. There are other books by Sammy Rhodes, and this is the first I’ve read.

I feel the book is a bit all over the place for me. There’s chapters which really helps, because he seems to jump from one topic to another. I guess it’s all in order, but I feel there’s a lot missing and something more that really needed to be said in it. This may be someone’s cup of tea, but it’s not mine. You can’t judge a book by it’s cover or title for that matter, and this made me think it would be funnier. I had better hopes for it based on the summary and it just went astray after the cover title. Some who have a better understanding of Sammy Rhodes as an author, or maybe just a better understanding on why “This is Awkward” will probably love it. This is Awkward, because I don’t. I had better expectations and it didn’t add up.
